The Cornucopia: Celebrating a Bountiful Harvest
No matter where you live in the world, if there was a bountiful harvest, there should be a celebration.
The Cornucopia in Greek Mythology
In Greek mythology, Zeus is the god who holds the horn of plenty as a symbol of fruitful abundance. The myth is that Zeus, as a baby, was cared for by a goat. He broke off one of her horns accidentally and because he was a god the horn then had eternal power to provide never-ending nourishment. Also, in Greek mythology, Demeter, the Greek goddess of Agriculture and/or her son Plutus, the Greek god of Wealth or Agricultural Bounty, are illustrated or sculpted holding up a cornucopia.
The Cornucopia in America
In America, the cornucopia is a symbol included in our celebration of Thanksgiving Day. It's tradition! A cornucopia also called “horn of plenty” (Latin "cornu" meaning "horn" and "copia" meaning "plenty") is a symbol of a harvest – usually pictured as goat’s horn overflowing with various fruits like apples, pears, grapes, etc.; corn on the cob; pumpkin (or gourds); and some even have nuts and flowers.
